Margot Robbie to Star in New Female-Fronted ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie

June 27, 2020

Ahoy, Margot!

Margot Robbie has got a new blockbuster on her horizon.

The Oscar-nominated actress will headline a new female-fronted “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie for Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The "Suicide Squad" star will be reteaming with “Birds of Prey” screenwriter Christina Hodson, who is writing the script for the new swashbuckling film.

According to the outlet, Robbie’s project is not a spin-off of the franchise starring Johnny Depp and will instead consist of new characters inspired by the iconic Disneyland attraction.

It is also unrelated to a “Pirates” reboot that was announced last year.

The new film is said to be in early stages of development and a release date or further casting has not been revealed.

Since “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” was released in 2003, the franchise has earned over $4.5 billion at the box office.

The original blockbuster spawned five sequels: “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,”  “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

The news of the film comes just days after Disney announced it was delaying the reopening of Disneyland in Anaheim, California  due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"The state of California has now indicated that it will not issue theme park reopening guidelines until sometime after July 4,” the company said a tweet adding it had no choice but to delay the reopening of the theme parks and resort hotels.

Disneyland Park had previously planned to reopen its doors to the public July 17.
