Boulder, Colorado Astronomer Names Asteroid After Freddie Mercury

September 14, 2016
Freddie Mercury of Queen was always a star. Now he's an asteroid, too. Mercury's bandmate Brian May and a Boulder, Colorado astronomer got the asteroid "FreddieMercury17473" named after the late singer and the announcement (below) was first shown on September 4 at the Freddie Mercury 70th Birthday Party in Montreaux, Switzerland.

The asteroid in question is estimated to be between 3 kilometers and 5 kilometers in diameter, and orbits the sun about once every 3.5 years in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
