Dear Johnny,

I’m sitting here writing to you from the KU Med NICU. On October 31st, I was admitted to the hospital at 27 weeks pregnant with contractions that wouldn’t stop. Four days later my son was born, because I had pre eclampsia and placental abruption. Having an emergency c section was probably the hardest thing I’ve gone through. My son was born November 4th, he weighed 2 lbs 11oz. We almost lost him within the first 24 hours, due to his lungs being underdeveloped. But as soon as I came into the room he instantly perked up and has been looking good ever since. It’s been 3 weeks and this is going to be a long NICU journey for us. He still has to build up his lungs, and learn to eat and maintain his temperature. Having a baby so close to the holidays has been hard. I drive an hour and a half every day to visit him, and that can be hard with a two year old at home. I never ask for much, but anything would help us during this time until I’m able to go back to work.

Thank you for reading my letter. –

Mikayla
