Dear Johnny,
I’m a single mom of two amazing teenagers. It’s just been us
and my mom since 2006. I’ve been a registered nurse for the
last 8 years. On September 25th of this year, I noticed some
blood in my urine. I went to the ER and was given some
antibiotics and a catheter. At first they thought it might be a
UTI, and they told me if it doesn’t improve in a week to come
back. On October 1st, I went back in the ER. After a CT
scan, they found a very large mass on my right kidney and
admitted me to the hospital. It was stage 4 kidney cancer
and had metastasized to my left adrenal gland. On October
4th, I had surgery to remove my kidney and my left adrenal
gland, and was in the hospital for 11 days. After missing
quite a bit of time at work, I went back in November but I’m
currently just release to work 4 hours a day. I am keeping up
with bills, but have gotten behind on my car payment. I can
handle everything else, I just can’t lose my car. I use it to get
to work, to get to appointments, for my kids, etc. I go back to
the hospital for my next scan in January and am hoping to
be cleared to work full time. I just don’t know how I will be
able to get caught up until then.
Thank you for reading my letter.
